Carbon Project Readiness

Bukit Balai Rejang (BBR) Landscape is a protection forest block in the southern of Sumatra, covered by three provinces Bengkulu, Jambi, and South Sumatra. BBR is an important habitat for tiger, and the important for habitat connectivity from Bukit Barisan and Kerinci Seblat National Park. This landscape is surrounded by a mosaic of forested, natural forest, degradation forest  and  included a variety of different utilization purposes, have a high intrinsic value for biodiversity as well. Despite the protected status, this globally important forest resource is under considerable threat. Over the decade 1990-2000 about 5 million ha of forest were lost in Sumatra, equivalent to a rate of 2.5% per year.

The extremely high pressure from direct threats is reducing the natural resilience of the forests to climate change.  WCS Indonesia Program has chosen a 45,000 ha protection forest for pilot carbon project readiness in BBR landscape and 19,000 ha community state forest in Kaur District, Province Bengkulu.   WCS Indonesia Program has been encouraging local government, local parliament, and local community to undertake self-initiative for carbon project as a part of national readiness program.  WCS has provided academic draft, local regulation for Local State Company and Benefit Sharing.  WCS-IP is promoting the stakeholders to discuss obtaining the agreement.  This lesson learnt would be one of the perfects carbon project readiness in a landscape level with the mosaic land use land cover and forest area status by Indonesia Ministry of Forestry.

BBR Protection forest would be an area for core project site, surrounded by community state forest.  Carbon trading could give the stakeholders for long-term benefit, and community state forest is for short term gain by doing sustainable forest management.
